About

Gulf Coast Large Animal Clinic is a large animal veterinary practice located at 15835 County Road 185, Alvin, TX 77511, established in 1991. The clinic sits on 200 acres of the original dairy farm where Dr. Gregg Knape, DVM was raised. Dr. Knape was born and raised in Alvin, Texas on a family farm producing dairy products and hay. His passion for animal care led him to Texas A&M University, where he graduated in 1976 with a degree in veterinary medicine specializing in farm animals. After graduating, he worked for five years in Nacogdoches, TX under Doctors Jim and Mike Ward before returning to Alvin to start his own practice. He is joined by his wife and practice manager Cheryl Knape, and veterinary technician Gary Batson, who has been with the clinic since its founding. The clinic specializes in equine and bovine care and is also a teaching clinic — welcoming FFA students and school field trips to learn about large animal care. Dr. Knape chaired mandatory drug testing for all livestock shown at the local rodeo starting in 1989. Services include ultrasound (reproductive and lameness), digital radiography, in-house Coggins lab (stat results within 2 hours), in-house lab work (CBC, thyroid, wellness panels), dental work using pneumatic power tools, gas anesthesia surgery, artificial insemination, onsite AI lot with partial shade, covered barn for cattle, hydraulic squeeze chute for cattle and wild horses, frozen semen storage, and 11 horse stalls (2 with IV/fluid setup).
